Nuestra Senora de Refugio Church in Puerto de Luna

This beautiful church was built in Puerta De Luna, ten miles south of Santa Rosa, around 1880. Mass is still held there.

My mother was born in Santa Rosa in 1938. She was from the Casaus/Baca/Gallegos families. There is also Romero, Sandoval and others in her heritage as well. You mention buying the Medley Cafe - my mother was a friend of Vickey Medley, the daughter of the Medley's who owned the cafe. Mom's family has a long history and are founders in New Mexico. Streets in Santa Rosa are named after our family and the family home is listed as a "Historical" home there although still owned by a family member. It has been fun looking at your photos and reading your blog posts. Thank You.

Lizyanbudy - thank you for your comments and for taking the time to visit my blog. I miss my home state and my hometown very much - this blog helps me feel connected. I'm sure I know the house you are referring to as listed as a Historical Site. I remember Vera Casaus and grew up half a block from her.

Thank you for your response! I was thrilled to find out that you knew my Aunt Vera! My grandmother was her sister. My mother lived with Aunt Vera for awhile after my grandmother died (mom was 14 at the time). As children, we visited the house where family would gather and we would have posole and chile caribe and all of those wonderful foods! New Mexicans have a deep love for their state and their heritage - a strong pride as well. I was born in California, but feel connected to my New Mexico roots. Thank you for your blog! I'm glad to have discovered it. I wonder if anyone remembers my mother? Celina Gallegos - born August 7, 1938 in the Casaus family home. She passed away three years ago - Mom's heart was always in New Mexico, she never forgot her language or her "people" as she would call them. Thanks again!

Here's how it came to be that I knew your aunt, at one time I was friends with a girl who was the daughter of H.L. and Elizabeth Gallegos. They were part of your aunt's family. Also, I lived on fourth street - behind your aunt's house. As you can imagine, everyone knew everyone else back in those days. I was in Santa Rosa for Christmas and just returned last night. I didn't have access to my blogs while there - I wish I had, I would have taken a picture of your aunt's place for you. I don't remember your mother by name but I will ask Daniel Flores - he is the retired school superintendent and a local historian. He has published some books on the area and he might know. I just bought one a couple of days ago - a really neat little book about Santa Rosa postcards - really cool - some dating back to 1901. If you want to, send me your email address and I'll let you know what I find out.

Cara, HL was my mother's cousin. Elizabeth was with Aunt Vera at the time of their death. You probably knew that. Everybody did know everybody and were often even related! After Aunt Vera passed away, most of the family hasn't been back. I think the lack of a home base is the reason, even though Orlando had said that everyone was welcome to come visit, without Aunt Vera being there it wasn't the same. I'm not sure who lives in the house at this time. I've been enjoying your site and plan to tell some of the family about it. My email is: Lizyanbudy@aol.com I appreciate the time you take to respond to my posts. Happy New Year!
